PEAKS ISLAND COUNCIL UPDATE Ferry vouchers: By now many of you have received your CBL voucher and student ticket information in the mail- and info is posted on the website. (www.peaksislandcouncil.info ) Funded from the special allocation of $50k from the city manager’s budget, these programs are restricted to year-round island residents only, by order of the Portland city council. If you or someone you know are a year-round resident and do not receive a letter by mid week please let Mike Murray know at MSM@portlandmaine.gov . Dogs: We didn’t do it! Recently, information has circulated that the Island Council generated an order to round up loose island dogs. This is not true- the PIC had not discussed nor taken a position on island dogs. We’re not sure from where the misunderstanding came, but Emergency Services Council liaison Bob Hurley and others will pursue it. A meeting is scheduled for this week with the police and councilors to discuss many island policing issues and to plan for a public meeting. We’ll let you know as dates, etc. are decided. Parking info for winter garage folks: From Mike Murray: Of note, we received info on Thursday about the Newbury St. Parking Lot (across from the former Village Cafe). The owner states that on the gravel area, he has room for 20-30 cars @ $60.00 per month. We are not sure if that will be year round parking, seasonal, long term, or for this year only. But it is a start. Also, as has been mentioned before, the Fish Pier lot currently has approx. 40 monthly spaces @$80.00 per month. Betsy and Bob are very close to completing the parking survey report. We’ll present results at a meeting and post it on the website soon. E-911: The council heard a presentation about street name changes to assist with emergency services response. Changes should help to eliminate confusion from dispatch and for personnel not familiar with quirky island names. However, changing addresses is complicated and requires coordination of city departments. If you are affected and have any problems, please contact the city’s E-911 Addressing Officer Leslie Kaynor at Portland Budget: |
